A Brief History of Heald Green Theatre Company
Heald Green Theatre Company was founded in 1962.
Our first permanent home was a converted chapel in the grounds of Cheadle Royal Hospital.
In 2000 we had to vacate the building but managed to acquire our present building, an ex-squash court, in the grounds of Gatley Golf Club in Cheshire.
The present building previously comprised three squash courts with changing rooms.
As you can imagine, a great deal of building work, both external, and internal, was required to convert it into a theatre.
The major building work was skilfully undertaken by a well established local builder and the rest of the work by theatre company members.
Members were involved in many aspects of the work, ranging from bricklaying and carpentry, to wiring, wallpapering and carpet laying.
The first performance commenced in the Autumn of 2000.
The removal of all our equipment, fixtures, and fittings,including the seating, from the old theatre, and re-installation in the new theatre, was accomplished after the close of the last play, in the old theatre, in 2000.
A new set was built every four weeks in 2000/2001, in order to complete a full season of plays.
